DIY Overhead Camera Rig

I need an overhead camera rig

I like to take photos and videos when I am working on different creative projects. I have been using a small tripod standing on stacked boxes, which does work fine. I feel I want something more permanent and easy to use.

My current tripod takes time to set up and i have to keep walking around the desk to check the screen. It is difficult to set up the shot and focus. Plus it takes up a lot of space on my desk and when I need to tidy it away, it takes awhile to get back into the right space. I wobbles and sometimes tips over.

What rigs are available to buy?

I don't really have the money to spend on a camera rig. Plus the overhead camera rig I would buy is $199 and I can not find a stockist in the UK. I would then need to buy the accessories just to be able to start using it.

There are lots of DIY overhead camera rig designs online.
I like the designs which stand over the desk rather than on the floor.

What do I want from a camera rig?

      • Easy to use
      • Sturdy
      • Minimum setup time
      • easy to access phone screen while filming
      • small footprint
      • allows me to work freely
      • built from materials I already have
      • works without accessories
      • accessories can be added in the future

My Design

I have decided I would like two overhead beams so that I have more lighting and camera placement options. Plus I feel this would make the overhead camera rig sturdier.

Design deconstruction
I am going to build the camera rig out of cardboard, paper and pva glue. So I need to create each of the design element blocks with stacked cardboard which will be wrapped with paper and pva glue in a form of papier-mache.

      • Newspaper
      • Cardboard
      • PVA glue mixed with 1/3 water
      • Masking tape
      • Craft knife
      • Ruler
      • Tape measure
      • Scissors
      • Pencil
      • Pot for glue and old paint brush

Does it work?

I made my overhead camera rig only using cardboard, paper & PVA glue.
